My father, Herbert Kaye (1914 - 1975)
The story goes that William Henry gave my father the Saturday afternoon off to get married, but that he had to be back at t'shop by 6 o'clock. I know he had a sports car at the time of his wedding, but am not sure when this picture of him and my mother, Winifred, was taken. Although he 'went into' the family business (did he have any choice?), and made the best of it, Herbert would much have preferred, I think, to have been on the stage: he could sing and tap-dance, and he and his sister, Vera, used to appear at various seaside music halls along the East Yorkshire coast. He was a member of the local amateur Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and sang in Xmas performances of The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance, and other G&S operas.
